How to Report Someone on Discord, Quick List

  1. Check if their message violates Discord’s guidelines.
  2. Turn on developer mode and find the relevant ID codes.
  3. Send your report.

How to Report Someone on Discord

Welcome to the How to Report Someone on Discord Guide. Discord is an incredible way to interact via voice and text chat with your gaming friends for free but occasionally someone says something in the chat that violates the discord guidelines. Depending on the severity of the message, you may decide to report the user directly to Discord so disciplinary action can be taken. However, it’s not as simple as it may appear at first glance.

How to Report Someone on Discord, In-Depth List

There are steps you need to take to successfully report someone that is harassing, spamming, threatening or simply being abusive in chat. There are times you might find an entire server is participating in harmful activity that violates community guidelines. Here’s what you can do to alert the moderators at Discord.

Step 1: Check if their message violates Discord’s guidelines

You don’t want to report someone unless their message violates Discord’s community guidelines. Activities and messages that are not tolerated on Discord include:

  • Harassment
  • Spam messages
  • Violating IP rights
  • Sharing child pornography
  • Glorifying or promoting suicide and self-harm
  • Distributing viruses
  • Threatening another user
  • Sharing images of gore or animal cruelty

If their message doesn’t fall into one of these categories, you likely shouldn’t report them directly to Discord. Instead, if possible, talk with the other members of the channel about their conduct. If you’re the leader of the channel, you can even kick them yourself. You can also block or mute the user to avoid seeing their content while continuing to see what everyone else is saying in the server.

Please note that if the message is deleted after you send the report, disciplinary action can still be taken. However, there is no way to report a message that has already been deleted.

Step 2: Turn on developer mode and find the relevant ID codes

You can’t simply hit a “report” button on Discord, at least not on the desktop app. Instead, you have to find a few ID codes that Discord’s team can use to investigate the offending messages. In order to see the ID codes, click the gear icon next to your name in the bottom-left corner of the screen and select the “appearance” tab. Scroll down to the “advanced” section of this page and you’ll see a toggle labeled “developer mode.” Turn it on.

Next, you need to get three different ID codes. Go to the message in question and right-click directly on the user’s name. Select “copy ID,” then paste the number you’ve copied somewhere and label it for later. Even if the user changes their username, the ID will remain the same.

Right-click on the message itself and once again select “copy ID.” This time, you’ll get an ID number for the message and channel. Paste it and label it like you did the other one.

Lastly, go over to the icon for the server on the left side of your screen, and right-click on it. Select “copy ID” a third time, and paste it with the two others.

Step 3: Send your report

Your last step will be to send your report to Discord via its Trust & Safety request center. Enter your email address, select your report type based on the option in the drop-down box that most closely applies to your situation, enter a subject, and finally describe the incident and provide all three ID codes in the “description” box. Send the report along and you’re ready to let Discord take care of the rest.

How to report on iOS

Reporting a Discord user on iOS is a much simpler process than doing it on a desktop. December > be too simple.

All you have to do is hold down your finger on top of the message in question and hit the red “report” option. There’s no explanation needed, and you don’t have to submit any ID codes. Despite this, Discord’s support team says it does look at these reports like it does the other ones. You might not get a response, but you can also send an email to abuse@discordapp.com to explain your situation if it needs to be taken care of quickly and you don’t have access to a computer.

There is always the chance that you accidentally hit that button, but it isn’t the end of the world if that happens.

How to clear a report from Discord

If you decide that the message you reported actually didn’t violate Discord guidelines, or if you accidentally reported someone on iOS, you can request that the Discord team clear the report by speaking directly to a support member. Head over to the Discord Twitter page and send a direct message explaining your situation. You’ll need to give your email address associated with the account along with your message, and Discord can then go into its queue of reports and clear the ones you sent.

Keep in mind that sending false reports also violates Discord’s terms of service, so you could end up facing punishment for doing so. Act quickly and Discord’s team will, too – it only took them a few minutes to respond, in our case, and the problem was resolved almost immediately.

History

The concept of Discord came from Jason Citron, who had founded OpenFeint, a social gaming platform for mobile games. He eventually sold OpenFeint to GREE in 2011 for US $104 million, which he used to found Hammer & Chisel, a game development studio, in 2012. Their first product was Fates Forever, released in 2014, which Citron anticipated to be the first MOBA game on mobile platforms, but it did not become commercially successful. However, during the development process, Citron noticed how difficult it was for his team to work out tactics in games like Final Fantasy XIV and League of Legends using available voice over IP (VoIP) software. Some VoIP options required players to type in IP addresses just to connect, while other services like Skype or TeamSpeak were resource-heavy and had known security problems. This led the developers to develop a chat service that was much friendlier to use and based on more modern technology.

To develop Discord, Hammer & Chisel gained additional funding from YouWeb’s 9+ incubator, which had also funded the startup of Hammer & Chisel, and from Benchmark capital and Tencent.

Discord was publicly released in December > 2015. According to Citron, the only area that they pushed Discord into was for the Reddit communities, finding that many subreddit forums were replacing IRC servers with Discord ones. Discord became popular among esports and LAN tournament gamers, and other Twitch streamers.

The company raised an additional US$20 million in funding for the software in January 2016. This included an investment from American multinational mass media and entertainment conglomerate WarnerMedia. In 2021 they sold their share after WarnerMedia Investment Group was shut down following the AT&T acquisition.

In December 2018 the company announced it raised $150 million in funding at a $2 billion valuation. The round was led by Greenoaks Capital with participation from Firstmark, Tencent, IVP, Index Ventures and Technology Opportunity Partners.

Software

Discord uses the metaphors of servers and channels similar to Internet Relay Chat even though these servers do not map to traditional hardware or virtual servers due to its distributed nature. A user can create a server on Discord, managing its public visibility and access, and create one or more channels within this service. Within a server, depending on access controls, users can create channels within a category framework, with the visibility and access on the channels also customizable to the server. One such customization is the ability to mark channels “NSFW” (Not safe for work), which forces first-time channel viewers to confirm that they are over 18 and willing to see such content. In addition to normal text-based channels, Discord servers can create voice-chat channels.

Every Discord user has a unique four-digit personal identification number discriminator, with a “#” after their username. This allows for multiple users to have the same username and for users to find friends easily.

Both at the server and the user level, Discord allows users to connect these to their Twitch or other gaming service account. These integrations provide unique messaging tools within the app: for example, Discord can determine the game a user is presently playing on Steam if they have connected their account.

The Discord client is built on the Electron framework using web technologies, which allows it to be multi-platform and operate on the web and as an installed application on personal computers. The software is supported by eleven data centers around the world to keep latency with clients low. All versions of the client support the same core feature set; screen sharing with desktop audio is Windows exclusive, as is downloading and playing games from the Discord Game Store. Discord is specifically designed for use while gaming, as it includes features such as low-latency, free voice chat servers for users and dedicated server infrastructure. Discord’s developers also added video calling and screen sharing in 2017. Support for calls between two or more users was added in an update on December > 28, 2016. In December 2016, the company introduced its GameBridge API, which allows game developers to directly integrate with Discord within games. The Git repository documentation for the Discord API is hosted on GitHub.

Discord provides partial support for rich text via the Markdown syntax. Discord uses the Opus audio format, which is low-latency and designed to compress speech.

While the software itself comes at no cost, the developers investigated ways to monetize it, with potential options including paid customization options such as emoji or stickers. In January 2017, the first paid subscription and features were released with ‘Discord Nitro Classic’ (formerly just ‘Discord Nitro’). For a monthly subscription fee of $4.99, users can get an animated avatar, use custom and/or animated emojis across all servers (non-nitro users can only use custom emoji on the server they were added to), an increased maximum file size on file uploads (from 8 MB to 50 MB), the ability to screen share in higher resolutions, the ability to choose their own personal identification number (from #0001 to #9999) and a unique profile badge, In December 2018, the formerly ‘Discord Nitro’ was renamed ‘Discord Nitro Classic’, and the new ‘Discord Nitro’ cost $9.99 and included access to free games through the Discord game store, monthly subscribers of ‘Discord Nitro Classic’ at the time of the introduction of the Discord games store have been gifted with ‘Discord Nitro’, lasting until January 1, 2021, and yearly subscribers of ‘Discord Nitro Classic’ were gifted with ‘Discord Nitro’ until January 1, 2021. The developers have claimed that while they will look for ways to monetize the software, it will never lose its core features.

Video calling and screen sharing features were added to Discord, first for a small test base in December > 2017 and later for all users in December 2017. While these features mimic live streaming capabilities of platforms like Twitch, the company does not plan to compete with these services, believing that these features are best used by small groups.

In December 2017, Discord offered server verification to game developers, publishers, and content creators, allowing them to display their server’s “official” status with a “verified checkmark” after confirming their identity with the Discord team. Developers and publishers with verified servers can use data from Discord to create a “rich presence” within their games, allowing players to connect their game profile to their Discord profile. By the end of 2017, about 450 servers were verified, with about 20 servers using the “rich presence” features.

Microsoft announced in December > 2018 that it will provide Discord support for Xbox Live users, allowing them to link their Discord and Xbox Live accounts so that they can connect with their Xbox Live friends list through Discord.

Online chat may refer to any kind of communication over the Internet that offers a real-time transmission of text messages from sender to receiver. Chat messages are generally short in order to enable other participants to respond quickly.

Thereby, a feeling similar to a spoken conversation is created, which distinguishes chatting from other text-based online communication forms such as Internet forums and email. Online chat may address point-to-point communications as well as multicast communications from one sender to many receivers and voice and video chat, or may be a feature of a web conferencing service.

Online chat in a less stringent definition may be primarily any direct text-based or video-based (webcams), one-on-one chat or one-to-many group chat (formally also known as synchronous conferencing), using tools such as instant messengers, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), talkers and possibly MUDs.

The expression online chat comes from the word chat which means “informal conversation”. Online chat includes web-based applications that allow communication – often directly addressed, but anonymous between users in a multi-user environment. Web conferencing is a more specific online service, that is often sold as a service, hosted on a web server controlled by the vendor.

The first online chat system was called Talkomatic, created by Doug Brown and David R. Woolley in 1973 on the PLATO System at the University of Illinois. It offered several channels, each of which could accommodate up to five people, with messages appearing on all users’ screens character-by-character as they were typed. Talkomatic was very popular among PLATO users into the mid-1980s. In 2014, Brown and Woolley released a web-based version of Talkomatic.

Digital distribution

In December > 2018, Discord launched a games storefront beta, allowing users to purchase a curated set of games through the service.[34] This will include a “First on Discord” featured set of games whom their developers attest to Discord’s help in getting them launched, giving these games 90 days of exclusivity on the Discord marketplace. Discord Nitro subscribers will also gain access to a rotating set of games as part of their subscription, with the price of Nitro being bumped from $4.99 to $9.99 a month.[29][35] A cheaper service called ‘Nitro Classic’ was also released that has the same perks as Nitro but does not include the free games.

Following the launch of the Epic Games Store, which challenged Valve‘s Steam storefront by only taking a 12% cut of game revenue, Discord announced in December 2018 that it would reduce its own revenue cut to 10%.[36]

To further support developers, starting in December > 2021 Discord gave the ability for developers and publishers that ran their own servers to offer their games through a dedicated store channel on their server, with Discord managing the payment processing and distribution. This can be used, for example, to give select users access to alpha- and beta-builds of a game in progress as an early access alternative.[37]

Discord announced in 2024 it was ending its free game service in 2024, as they found too few people were playing the games offered. Discord’s digital storefront remains operational.[38]

Reception

By January 2016, Hammer & Chisel claimed that Discord had been used by 3 million people, with growth of 1 million per month, reaching 11 million users in December > that year.[17][39] By December 2016, the company reported it had 25 million users worldwide.[24] By the end of 2017, the service had drawn nearly 90 million users, with roughly 1.5 million new users each week.[40] With the service’s third anniversary, Discord stated that it had 130 million unique registered users.[41][42] The company observed that while the bulk of their servers are used for gaming-related purposes, a small number have been created by users for non-gaming activities, like stock tradingfantasy football, and other shared interest groups.[31]

In December > 2016, one year after the software’s release, Tom Marks, writing for PC Gamer, described Discord as the best VoIP service available.[14] Lifehacker has praised Discord’s interface, ease of use and platform compatibility.[43]

On the occasion of its fourth-anniversary celebrations in December > 2021, Discord announced that it has more than 250 million registered users across its web and mobile platforms. In the same press release the company also said that 56 million people use its service every month, sending a total of 25 billion messages (850 million messages per day). The company also revealed that its top-7 most popular verified servers include: Fortnite, SpellBreak, PUBG MobileClash RoyaleMinecraftZombsRoyale and Rainbow 6.[44]

Discord has had problems with hostile behaviour and abuse within chats, with some communities of chat servers being “raided” (the taking over of a server by a large number of users) by other communities. This includes flooding with controversial topics related to race, religion, politics, and pornography.[45] Discord has stated that they have plans to implement changes that would “rid the platform of the issue”.[46]

To better protect its users and its services since these events, Discord has implemented a trust and safety team that is on call around the clock to monitor the servers and respond to reports. This includes dealing with user harassment, servers that violate Discord’s terms of service, and to protect servers from “raiding” and spamming by malicious users or bots. While they do not directly monitor messages, the trust and safety team can determine malicious activity from service use patterns and take appropriate steps, including more detailed investigation, to deal with the matter. The service plans to expand this team as they continue to gain new users.[31][40]

Controversial content

Discord gained popularity with the alt-right due to the client’s supporting anonymity and privacy. Analyst Keegan Hankes from the Southern Poverty Law Center said “It’s pretty unavoidable to be a leader in this [alt-right] movement without participating in Discord”.[47][48] In early 2017, CEO Jason Citron stated Discord was aware of these groups and their servers.[49] Citron stated that servers found to be engaged in illegal activities or violations of the terms of service would be shut down, but would not disclose any examples.[50]

Following the violent events that occurred during the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, on December > 12, 2017, it was found that Discord had been used to plan and organize the white nationalist rally. This included participation by Richard Spencer and Andrew Anglin, high-level figures in the movement.[47] Discord responded by closing servers that supported the alt-right and far-right, and banning users who had participated.[51] Discord’s executives condemned “white supremacy” and “neo-Nazism”, and said that these groups “are not welcome on Discord”.[47] Discord has worked with the Southern Poverty Law Center to identify hateful groups using Discord and ban those groups from the service.[52] Since then, several neo-Nazi and alt-right servers have been shut down by Discord, including those operated by neo-Nazi terrorist group Atomwaffen DivisionNordic Resistance Movement, Iron December > , and European Domas.[53]

In January 2018, The Daily Beast reported that it found several Discord servers that were specifically engaged in distributing revenge porn and facilitating real-world harassment of the victims of these images and videos. Such actions are against Discord’s terms of service and Discord has shut down servers and banned users identified from these servers, but the ease of creating new accounts and servers allows such servers to continue to proliferate.[54]

In December > 2018, Discord updated its terms of service to ban drawn pornography with underaged subjects.[55] A social media movement subsequently criticized Discord for selectively allowing “cub” content, or underaged pornographic furry artwork, under the same guidelines.[56] Discord moderators held that “cub porn” was separate from lolicon and shotacon, being “allowable as long as it is tagged properly.”[55] After numerous complaints from the community, Discord amended its community guidelines in December > 2021 to include “non-humanoid animals and mythological creatures as long as they appear to be underage” in its list of disallowed categories, in addition to announcing periodic transparency reports to better communicate with users.[57]

In December > 2021, the media collective Unicorn Riot published the contents of a Discord server used by several members of the white nationalist group Identity Evropa who were also members of the United States Armed Forces.[58]

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), also called IP telephony, is a method and group of technologies for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. The terms Internet telephonybroadband telephony, and broadband phone service specifically refer to the provisioning of communications services (voice, faxSMS, voice-messaging) over the public Internet, rather than via the public switched telephone network (PSTN), also known as plain old telephone service (POTS).

The steps and principles involved in originating VoIP telephone calls are similar to traditional digital telephony and involve signaling, channel setup, digitization of the analog voice signals, and encoding. Instead of being transmitted over a circuit-switched network, the digital information is packetized and transmission occurs as IP packets over a packet-switched network. They transport media streams using special media delivery protocols that encode audio and video with audio codecs and video codecs. Various codecs exist that optimize the media stream based on application requirements and network bandwidth; some implementations rely on narrowband and compressed speech, while others support high-fidelity stereo codecs.

The most widely speech coding standards in VoIP are based on the linear predictive coding (LPC) and modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) compression methods. Popular codecs include the MDCT-based AAC-LD (used in FaceTime), the LPC/MDCT-based Opus (used in WhatsApp), the LPC-based SILK (used in Skype), μ-law and A-law versions of G.711G.722, and an open source voice codec known as iLBC, a codec that uses only 8 kbit/s each way called G.729.

Early providers of voice-over-IP services offered business models and technical solutions that mirrored the architecture of the legacy telephone network. Second-generation providers, such as Skype, built closed networks for private user bases, offering the benefit of free calls and convenience while potentially charging for access to other communication networks, such as the PSTN. This limited the freedom of users to mix-and-match third-party hardware and software. Third-generation providers, such as Google Talk, adopted the concept of federated VoIP—which is a departure from the architecture of the legacy networks.[1] These solutions typically allow dynamic interconnection between users on any two domains on the Internet when a user wishes to place a call.

In addition to VoIP phones, VoIP is also available on many personal computers and other Internet access devices. Calls and SMS text messages may be sent over mobile data or Wi-Fi.[2] VoIP allows modern communications technologies (including telephones, smartphones, voice and video conferencing, email, and presence detection) to be consolidated using a single unified communications system.[3]

Communication on the IP network is perceived as less reliable in contrast to the circuit-switched public telephone network because it does not provide a network-based mechanism to ensure that data packets are not lost, and are delivered in sequential order. It is a best-effort network without fundamental Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. Voice, and all other data, travels in packets over IP networks with fixed maximum capacity. This system may be more prone to data loss in the presence of congestion[a] than traditional circuit switched systems; a circuit switched system of insufficient capacity will refuse new connections while carrying the remainder without impairment, while the quality of real-time data such as telephone conversations on packet-switched networks degrades dramatically.[17] Therefore, VoIP implementations may face problems with latency, packet loss, and jitter.[17][18]

By default, network routers handle traffic on a first-come, first-served basis. Fixed delays cannot be controlled as they are caused by the physical distance the packets travel. They are especially problematic when satellite circuits are involved because of the long distance to a geostationary satellite and back; delays of 400–600 ms are typical. Latency can be minimized by marking voice packets as being delay-sensitive with QoS methods such as DiffServ.[17]

Network routers on high volume traffic links may introduce latency that exceeds permissible thresholds for VoIP. Excessive load on a link can cause congestion and associated queueing delays and packet loss. This signals a transport protocol like TCP to reduce its transmission rate to alleviate the congestion. But VoIP usually uses UDP not TCP because recovering from congestion through retransmission usually entails too much latency.[17] So QoS mechanisms can avoid the undesirable loss of VoIP packets by immediately transmitting them ahead of any queued bulk traffic on the same link, even when the link is congested by bulk traffic.

VoIP endpoints usually have to wait for completion of transmission of previous packets before new data may be sent. Although it is possible to preempt (abort) a less important packet in mid-transmission, this is not commonly done, especially on high-speed links where transmission times are short even for maximum-sized packets.[19] An alternative to preemption on slower links, such as dialup and digital subscriber line (DSL), is to reduce the maximum transmission time by reducing the maximum transmission unit. But since every packet must contain protocol headers, this increases relative header overhead on every link traversed.[19]

The receiver must resequence IP packets that arrive out of order and recover gracefully when packets arrive too late or not at all. Packet delay variation results from changes in queuing delay along a given network path due to competition from other users for the same transmission links. VoIP receivers accommodate this variation by storing incoming packets briefly in a playout buffer, deliberately increasing latency to improve the chance that each packet will be on hand when it is time for the voice engine to play it. The added delay is thus a compromise between excessive latency and excessive dropout, i.e. momentary audio interruptions.

Although jitter is a random variable, it is the sum of several other random variables which are at least somewhat independent: the individual queuing delays of the routers along the Internet path in question. Motivated by the central limit theorem, jitter can be modeled as a gaussian random variable. This suggests continually estimating the mean delay and its standard deviation and setting the playout delay so that only packets delayed more than several standard deviations above the mean will arrive too late to be useful. In practice, the variance in latency of many Internet paths is dominated by a small number (often one) of relatively slow and congested bottleneck links. Most Internet backbone links are now so fast (e.g. 10 Gbit/s) that their delays are dominated by the transmission medium (e.g. optical fiber) and the routers driving them do not have enough buffering for queuing delays to be significant.[citation needed] Some VoIP providers now offer fiber to the building (FTTB) in order to ensure the highest VoIP call quality, reliability, and service up-time.[3]

A number of protocols have been defined to support the reporting of quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) for VoIP calls. These include RTP Control Protocol (RTCP) extended reports,[20]SIP RTCP summary reports, H.460.9 Annex B (for H.323), H.248.30 and MGCP extensions.

The RTCP extended report VoIP metrics block specified by RFC 3611 is generated by an IP phone or gateway during a live call and contains information on packet loss rate, packet discard rate (because of jitter), packet loss/discard burst metrics (burst length/density, gap length/density), network delay, end system delay, signal/noise/echo level, mean opinion scores (MOS) and R factors and configuration information related to the jitter buffer. VoIP metrics reports are exchanged between IP endpoints on an occasional basis during a call, and an end of call message sent via SIP RTCP summary report or one of the other signaling protocol extensions. VoIP metrics reports are intended to support real-time feedback related to QoS problems, the exchange of information between the endpoints for improved call quality calculation and a variety of other applications.
